Storängstorget, a new public square located in the rapidly developing area of Norra Djurgårdsstaden (Royal Stockholm Seaport) needed a combined electrical network station and pumping facility for the public fountain. Our solution was to create a building that contributed to the environment through a sculptural facade of wood ribs that creates an inviting, southern-facing bench – a fitting backdrop to watch the activities on the public square. Giving the building this additional public function avoided issues of cost and access to equipment associated with a below-ground solution. The irregular volume surfaced in corten steel with a sedum roof provides information about the level of energy use in the area, and a cut-out image of a deer refers to the name of the community – Hjorthagen (deer meadow).
